Treatment of broken and abraded teeth is individual and specific, and depends mainly on the size of the fracture or the abrasion of the enamel or dentine. The methods for restoration of broken or abraded teeth are the same, but the choice of a particular method is made depending on the size and nature of the damage of the teeth. Therefore, the methods will be described separately.

The treatment of abraded teeth depends on how advanced the process is.

In the early stages, there is minimal damage to the enamel and a restoration of the abraded parts is not necessary. Fluoride varnishes and gels can be applied to reduce sensitivity and strengthen the enamel.

In the advanced stages, where the abrasion affects the dentine, there is lowering of the height of the occlusion, which is already a serious problem, and restoration of the abraded parts of the teeth is required. If the abrasion has not reached the nerve of the tooth, restoration can be achieved by making an inlay (onlay, overlay) or placing a standard or a metal-ceramic crown.
If the abrasion has reached the nerve, it is necessary to carry out endodontic treatment and place a root post and make a tooth stump/pinlay, and only then an appropriate crown.
Thus, restoration of the normal height of the occlusion, the anatomical shape and normal chewing are achieved.
When teeth abrasion is due to bruxism (teeth grinding), plastic braces are made, which are to be worn at night.

The treatment of broken teeth depends on the damage to the crown or root.

In the treatment of broken teeth, an X-ray picture is required and vitality is checked. These additional checks assist in the determination of the method and manner of treatment.

Small enamel deffects – the enamel is smoothened and polished with appropriate rubber cups and treated with fluoride varnish.

Small fractures that have reached the dentine require photopolymer fillings.

In fractures of large parts of the tooth, but without affecting the nerve, parapulpal posts are placed, to improve retention of photopolymer fillings, or inlays are made.

In fractures of the crown with damage to the nerve of the tooth, root canal treatment is carried out and a photopolymer filling is placed, and if the breakage is larger – a crown.

In breakage of the entire tooth, the tooth root is treated. In the root canal, a post is placed (from metal or glass fibre) and a tooth stump is made on which a crown is placed.

In breakage of the tip of the root, apical osteotomy is done.

When there is a vertical fracture and a tooth is split right through the roots, the only treatment is dental extraction.

Bonding is a procedure for restoration of small defects.

Placing of a post and core in the root canal
The placement of a post and core is used for teeth with severely damaged.

Construction of a tooth stump/pinlay
Once the post has been inserted in the root canal.

Fabrication of a dental crown
Dental crowns are used for treatment of defects and damages.
