The making of dentures is a universal way to treat partial or complete edentulism (being toothless). When there is loss of some or all of the teeth, changes are observed in the oral cavity. They distort chewing and speech function, and can also change the appearance of the face (sunken lips and cheeks, the chin sticks forward), leading to impaired aesthetic appearance and confidence issues (the patient hides their mouth with a hand). Dentures can be complete (in the absence of all teeth) or partial (from one missing to one tooth left). Each denture is made of a denture base and artificial teeth, while the partial denture also includes components for retention and stabilization (different types of connectors, retainers, etc.). The denture materials are special pink plastic or metal or a combination of both.
Other advantages are the lower price, easy production (for plastic dentures), opportunity for correction and repair (in case of a breakage or where the denture is uncomfortable).
A disadvantage of the removable dentures is their mobility – eating with a denture is never as safe and comfortable as with a dental bridge. Dentures are more bulky and require a longer period of adaptation for the patient. Plastic dentures can break during eating and injure the oral mucosal lining. The plastic material of which they are made ages over the years, resulting in discoloration (yellowing) and reduction of the strength. This requires replacement in 5-6 years. Cast partial dentures do not have these disadvantages, but require high precision when made and are more expensive.
Before the denture is made, preparatory work and planning is done. Damaged roots are removed, broken fillings are restored, and crowns are placed on teeth that need correction, sharp edges in the bone are corrected (which would have caused discomfort with the denture). The preparatory work is vital and as important as the making of the denture itself.
Depending on the material used dentures can be three basic types – pink plastic, cast partial and soft plastic dentures.
Pink plastic dentures
Complete or partial plastic dentures are the most commonly used type because.
