Brushing is the main preventive measure against the development of caries and gingivitis. Maintaining a strict oral hygiene is an important habit for people. This habit needs to be created in early childhood and carried out daily and efficiently. An appropriate paste, a tooth brush and a correct way of bruising are required. The market is flooded with various tooth pastes, brushes and other cleaning accessories, but an optimum combination can be recommended by a dentist. During a check-up information is provided, depending on the condition of the patient’s oral health, regarding what brushes, pastes and solutions should be used. The main principle is to brush your teeth in the morning and before bed for about 3 minutes (the duration of a song on the radio). The most important factors for truly effective cleaning of the teeth are not so much the type of the tooth brush and paste, as the implementation of specific movements with the toothbrush. Many people, despite regular brushing, fail to effectively remove the dental plaque, which is due to incorrect movements with the toothbrush. The proper brushing technique requires careful and thorough cleaning of all tooth surfaces.
Basic technique for brushing teeth.
The toothbrush is placed in a horizontal position so that the angle of the bristles is about 45 degrees relative to the gum. For the upper jaw, it is started from the molars on one side and circular “sweeping” motion in direction from the gum to the tooth are performed. 10 seconds are used for each tooth. In the same way the outer surfaces of the lower jaw are cleaned.
With the inner surfaces, the tooth brush is placed on the upper jaw from the palate, and for lower jaw – from the tongue, and circular and sweeping movements from the gum to the tooth are performed in order to clean carefully the tooth.
In the area of the front teeth, the brush is placed vertically and the teeth are cleaned with several sweeping movements.
Finally, the brush is used on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, where back and forth movements are used.
It is desirable to clean tongue as well to remove bacteria that cause bad breath. Then, the mouth can be rinsed with water and the tooth brush is carefully washed.

Three out of the five surfaces of the teeth are cleaned using a tooth brush and a tooth paste. The other two surfaces need special care in order to avoid accumulation of plaque and food debris. Dental floss, interdental brushes, hydro shower with antiseptic solutions can be used. A dentist can demonstrate how to use these. Regular and proper brushing prevents the development of caries and gum disease.
